It was actually my Filipina wife who got me into rap music. When we got to the U.S., we were living in an apartment complex, and Karli started hanging out at the pool with these young black girls of her age. I'd come home from work around midnight, and she'd be playing it so loudly. It didn't take long before she had a young black guy for a "sideline," as she unapologetically called it when I busted her. We had a HUGE fight, but she made it crystal clear she was NOT going to give him up, and told me she was ready to move out, if that's the way I wanted it. I'm just a plain little white guy, and Karli was way out of my league, so I had to swallow my anger and my pride.
